Imagine having one AI model that can understand transportation data and perform many prediction tasks instead of training a separate model for each one. That’s the vision behind this ongoing research project. I’m developing a Transportation Foundation Model that learns general representations of travel behaviour and can be adapted to tasks such as mode choice prediction, demand forecasting, destination prediction, and more. Inspired by modern foundation models in AI, the project aims to create a reusable, scalable framework that advances the next generation of intelligent transportation systems. Project Overview
How do people choose between driving, public transport, cycling, or walking? That’s the question I’m exploring in this ongoing research project. By combining Transformer architectures with Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), I’m developing a deep learning model to predict travel mode choices using large-scale transportation data from Tehran. The goal is to create models that are not only highly accurate but also incorporate transportation knowledge into the learning process. Engineering work often involves repetitive calculations and administrative tasks that can consume valuable time. This ongoing project focuses on developing a collection of Python-based tools to automate those processes—from culvert design and CSDP clustering to file management and other daily engineering tasks. All of these utilities are integrated into a full-stack web platform, giving employees a single place to access the tools they need and significantly improving efficiency across the company’s workflow. Although the software is proprietary and cannot be open-sourced, I’m excited to share its concepts and selected features here on my portfolio.
Project Overview
For this project, I built a microscopic traffic simulation framework entirely in Python using object-oriented programming principles. The simulator models roads, vehicles, and drivers, each with unique behaviours and decision-making strategies, allowing realistic interactions to emerge naturally. To evaluate its performance, I applied the framework to the well-known Sioux Falls transportation network and analysed traffic flow under different driving scenarios. It was a great opportunity to combine software engineering with transportation research while creating a flexible platform for future intelligent transportation studies.
This project started with a challenge: extracting valuable data from a legacy website that couldn’t even provide proper access to its own information! I developed a complete data pipeline that scrapes the website, decodes complex raw data using Python and regular expressions, stores everything in a well-designed SQL database, and performs over 20 automated analyses to evaluate employee performance. To make the system practical for everyday use, I built both a Windows application for automated data collection and a web dashboard for visualising insights and generating configurable reports. 🚀
